Passport To Life is an employability project targeting 12 to 16 year old young people who are still at school. The project aims to equip young people with the information and skills necessary to pursue satisfying and fulfilling careers, and to do this in a fun and interesting way. Most especially, the project aims to encourage young people to consider further education and employment as an alternative to worklessness and dependence on government welfare.

"To increase the chances of sustained employment for vulnerable and disadvantaged groups - in order to lift them permanently out of poverty."
Objective 1, Closing the Opportunity Gap, The Scottish Executive

Passport To Life covers a broad spectrum of employability issues, tackling subjects such as self-confidence and behaviour management, as well as the more traditional specifics of CV writing and interview skills. Participants are introduced to the benefits and opportunities available to them through further education, and local and national employers from many different fields of industry provide a wide choice of on-site tours and talks. Topics such as sectarianism and territorialism are also covered in relation to the workplace, as well as healthy living, volunteering, and coping in stressful environments.

"A Scotland in which every young person has the opportunities, skills and support to make a successful transition to working life and active citizenship."
Social Justice, 'A Scotland Where Everyone Matters', Scottish Executive, November 1999

The Passport To Life project is run through a series of 15 workshops, from which participants select 10 to complete. These workshops can be tailored to meet the specific requirements of the client group, and can be run during school time, within school premises. Depending on specific preferences, workshops maybe all classroom based, and run within school period time limits; alternatively, they can incorporate out-of-school trips that require longer time commitments. On completion of the 10 selected workshops, each participant is presented with their own Passport To Life folder that includes completion certificates, a Personal Action Plan, a CV, and a CD ROM with their personal details and a copy of their CV in digital format. On-going follow-up advice and support may be offered as required.

The Passport To Life employability project is designed to match the requirements of the Scottish Executive Closing the Gap objectives, and is in line with those recommendations made by the Beattie Committee Report (1999). It addresses certain priorities of the West Dunbartonshire Youth Strategy for 2005/9, and is directly relevant to the problem of worklessness highlighted in the West Dunbartonshire CPP Regeneration Outcome Agreement (2005). At it's core, Passport To Life aims to encourage young people to be all they can be in life, and encourages them to believe in themselves as valuable, capable members of the community. We want our young people to fulfil their potential and to contribute to society as happy, satisfied and responsible individuals.

Costing
Passport To Life costs per child per hour are £7.25; or an average of £145 per child for 10 workshops.
