The Tullochan Trust’s first ever music specific project, Music Makers, began in April 2006. The project is funded by the Scottish Arts Council’s Youth Music Initiative.

Through Music Makers, 120 young people will benefit from various types of music making opportunities including singing and song writing, improvisation, band tuition and having the opportunity to record their work on to C.D.

We are lucky to have Carol Laula, one of Scotland’s leading singer-songwriters, as the main tutor for the project. Carol’s experience and talent are a fantastic asset to the project which started in April with young people from the Network and Hop, Skip and Jump having the chance to take part in sessions using E-Jay computer software.

This software enabled the participants to create their own Dance and Hip Hop songs on the computer, which they were then able to put on to their own C.D.
More than 40 young people took part in this part of the project and all were delighted with the songs they produced.

In September 2006, we started working with 6 groups from across the Trust on singing, song writing and band development. This part of the programme is currently giving approx. 60 young people aged 8 -18 the opportunity to write their own material, learn an instrument and develop existing instrumental skill and through this, form several groups and bands.

For this part of the project, we also have musicians Mick Slaven and Marco Rea as tutors. In the past, Mick has been a guitarist for Del Amitri and will soon be going on tour with another of Scotland’s best-known bands, Deacon Blue.

The young people will then be able to showcase their works in front of their peers, friends and family in a concert, which will be held in January. There are many benefits to the programme for example - learning of new skills, development of existing skills and talent, increased confidence through performance and teamwork and communication through being part of a band.

We will also be organising sessions some African and Samba drumming sessions which will raise the young peoples awareness of music from other cultures as well as providing an excellent experience of rhythm and timing.
