The Tullochan Trust was set up in 1996, with an anonymous donation of £1,000, as a living memorial to Brigadier Alastair Pearson CB, DSO***, OBE, MC, KStJ, TD.
The Colonel, as he was always known, was much-loved and respected, was one of the most decorated men in World War II and he exemplified and realised the value of courage and leadership:
he also had total faith in, and commitment to, young people.
His daughter, Fiona Stuart, the founder and Chair of the Trust, continues this dedication to young people through her active and visionary leadership.
Since its inception, the Trust has gone from strength to strength: it now has 23 staff and to date has secured over £2.5 million funding, with core costs at c.10%. Our work at present is based in West Dunbartonshire, which is the third most deprived area in Scotland as it has 19 recognised areas of multiple deprivation; all the areas have a wide range of social and economic problems which have a detrimental effect on many young peoples' lives and development.
The Tullochan Trust works in partnership with local schools, police, community groups and relevant agencies; we offer a wide range of activities, across 8 main projects, to over 500 vulnerable 8-18 year olds annually. Our projects are designed to tackle personal development, healthy living, employability, early intervention: they include sport; arts & crafts; music and drama; outdoor education; IT and literacy; homework clubs, issue-based workshops and more. The Trust's overall aims are to:
Promote the advancement, education and character of young people.
Foster virtues of courage, loyalty, self-discipline and a sense of pride and achievement in young people.
Develop qualities of leadership, teamwork and citizenship in the community.
Alleviate the poverty of aspiration in young people and broaden their horizons.
Provide positive influences and experiences to help young people reach their full potential and develop as individuals over a period of years.
Provide holistic and long-term support to each young person.
Unique amongst youth organisations, the Tullochan Trust offers long-term, caring commitment to the young people who can join us from age eight onwards, progress from project to project, and choose to take part in two or three of them at any one time. We encourage and enable them to stay with us until they go into further education or employment, or for as long as they need us. We are a secure feature in their lives.
The quality and effectiveness of the Tullochan Trust's work has earned us considerable recognition and support from a range of public and private sector funding bodies and government agencies. The Trust has acquired a wealth of experience and knowledge in working with young people, schools, parents and partner agencies. Our immediate aim is to employ this experience in the development of projects and services to young people in other areas.
